SKFU’s PS3 Exploit Loader + POC 0.1
Posted by Luis Gallardo in PS3 on 21/06/2010
Developer SKFU has releases a proof of concept that lets you load a classic “Hello world” using an exploit on the PS3 (all versions). This might be the begging of something or just the end of nothing, but I still remember people saying Davee -- Matiaz exploit will lead to nowhere, or that the ChickHEN only will load few homebrews on the PSP, so I have hope…
Here you are a video that shows the exploit running (by Dagumora):
Do it yourself
If you want to test it yourself, just follow this steps:
- Download the needed files.
- Install loader.p3t like a common theme file.
- Put loadme.fu on an USB stick’s root directory.
- Insert USB device into any PS3 USB port.
- Enable the theme you just installed before.
- Hello World!!
How does it work?
The PS3 theme file is able to load the loadme.fu script from any USB port. The script is executed. The “loader” is for future-use as well to load any .fu files SKU will release.

Required PS3′s update drops Linux
Posted by Luis Gallardo in Linux, PS3 on 15/04/2010
As many of you might have read in other posts on the net, Sony’s firmware 3.21 update aims to stop the research about hacking the console, which is lead mainly by GeoHot. Sony claims users have the option to update or not but if you don’t, you won’t be able to enjoy the platform’s services, like downloading demos, buying at the Store, trophies, online gaming, etc.
But there is still hope, because GeoHot is working on a hack for firmware 3.21 that will put back the OtherOs option as it was on version 3.15 and previous ones. I’m really interested in this firmware 3.21 hack because:
- I bought the console because I knew I could installed Linux from an option provided by the system. It was a feature I paid for and Sony removed it without refunding me part of my money or even asking me.
- If sceners have total control over the console, they could disable the hypervisor completely, so Linux could have access to all hardware, I mean, to the 6 disabled SPU, Video RAM or the video RAM itself. Result? A better performance of Linux on the console (let’s be honest, it’s a little slow on the PS3).
- Homebrews. It would be interesting to have some emulators like NES, SNES, Sega Génesis…or even Wii (yes, maybe I’m dreaming but it could be done by using Move, because the PS3 is more powerful than Wii). Piracy? The right thing is to own the original game in order to play a backup. Even though some titles not longer exist, you have to consider that someones have been relaunched by Sony and Nintendo at its respectively stores.
- More homebrews. Not everything is about emulators. We have seen some games launched on the PSP. Even though they can’t be compared with titles like God of War, they looks likes the Minis. Other applications can be developed that exceed those supplied by Sony (browsers, multimedia players, instant messaging, VoIP, etc). And thinking a little bit, it comes to my mind that Sony can take advantage of the Scene if they weren’t short-sight. Just imagine if Sony provides a SDK for third-party developers so they can certifies and sell those applications through its Store, of course, charging for every purchase…where did that brilliant idea came up? Apple, Android, Nokia, etc?
For now we have to wait and don’t update to firmware 3.21…even though Sony claims is a required update, as you can see on the above picture.
No violent video games…more safety?
Posted by Luis Gallardo in Off-Topic, PS3, PSP on 21/03/2010
No, this is not due to the electrical rationing that Venezuela is facing, this is the result of the law against violent video games.
And what about the real violence, the one that kills people?…That’s okay, because there aren’t any law for protect us or against real delinquents, those outside a “plaiestachon” (as our president would say) because they know impunity rules our country.

This guy tore down a PS3 Slim, connected it to a LCD-TV and turned it into a PS3 Slim Laptop. He used the following:
- PS3 Slim
- 17″ widescreen LCD with HDMI-DVI digital connection.
- Built-in power supplies / compartment for the AC cord.
- Push button volume control with stereo speakers.
- Sleek white monochromatic styling with pin stripes.

How long does it take to compile a kernel on a PS3?
Posted by Luis Gallardo in Linux, PS3 on 14/09/2009
People say that one way of gauging a PC’s performance is by measuring the kernel compilation time, because it implies the usage of memory, disk and CPU.
So, I decided to measure the compilation time of the new kernel 2.6.31, that has some enhancements on swap management, using the platform’s standard options, i.e., a .config file generated with make ps3_defconfig, and here are the results:
real 46m52.802s user 34m17.999s sys 9m44.375s
Xfce was running on the PS3 and the only application opened was Iceweasel with this blog’s page.

Before updating to Sony’s firmware 3.0, I wondered whether or not this new version would let me to use my already installed Linux partition, and the answer is…yes!!
Of course I have a PS3 “fat” (80 GB edition), but on new PlayStaion 3 models that option its not available…Sorry for you guys, but at least you will have a cheaper PS3!
Fan cooler’s clean-up mode on PS3
Posted by Luis Gallardo in PS3 on 19/07/2009
If you are worried about all the dust your PS3 can accumulate inside, here’s a little trick to put its fan coolers to work in clean up mode:
- Turn off your PS3 from the XMB.
- Switch it off completely. The switcher is in the back.
- Press down the eject button.
- While pressing down the eject button, switch on the PS3.
You’ll will ear PS3′s fan coolers louder than normal. It’s okay, they’ll be working that way for few seconds to expel any dust inside.
Warnings
- It seems this method doesn’t work on PS3 20 GB and 60 GB models
- Do it on your own risk
Guitar Hero’s Controller on Frets on Fire
Posted by Luis Gallardo in Linux, PS3 on 31/05/2009
When I came across Frets on Fire I read some reviews and forum’s faq, and one thing that really like me was the fact you can use a Guitar Hero’ s Guitar to play your songs. Well, the thing is that I finally got my Guitar Hero III bundle and here’s what you need to do to set it on Frets on Fire…
Installation
No needed. Just plug in the USB receiver and it will be ready. Just in case you want to know if it was detected, check your log executing tail -f /var/log/syslog:
Settings
By the default, Frets on Fire is set to work with a keyboard so you will need to map you Guitar Hero controller in Settings > Key Settings
