Installing Custom Firmware 6.20 PRO
Posted by Luis Gallardo in PSP on 22/04/2011
Note: This video was made using PRO-B4, but the installation procedure is the same.
The main feature of this custom firmware is the fact it can be used on all PSP’s even those not 100% hackable (PSP 2000 with TA-088v3 mobo, PSP 3000 and PSPGo). The only issue is that it only runs on official firmware 6.20 because it’s based on an exploit found in this firmware. Without further ado, let’s see how to install it:
Requisites
- PSP 1000, 2000, PSP 3000 or PSPGo.
- Firmware 6.20 installed.
- Battery charged at least to 78%.
Warning
Do the following steps at your own risk. Remember that only you are responsible of what you do to your console. Although I followed this method successfully, I won’t take responsibility if you brick your console.
Installing
- Download Custom Firmware 620 PRO-B10 fix1 and extract it.
- Copy PROUPDATE and 620PRO_Permanent folders to /PSP/GAME directory in the memory stick.
- Go to the game menu and run UPDATE PRO only, or UPDATE PRO and then PERMANENT PATCH according to which method you decide, the no permanent one or the permanent one, respectively.
No permanent method vs. permanent method
There two folders because there are two methods, the no permanent one which allows you to run the custom firmware on the official firmware and leave all as it was after rebooting the console; and the permanent one which install the custom firmware on the PSP, avoiding to lose the hack after rebooting.
Which one I choose?
I think is a matter of tastes, because both methods write the PSP’s memory flash, but only one does it permanent. Maybe the no permanent was useful to be able to connect to PSN with the official firmware.

Making a magic MS on the PSP
Posted by Luis Gallardo in PSP on 21/02/2011
The magic memory stick or MS magic for short, is a prepared memory that let you run an installer for Dark-Alex’s custom firmware, which work in conjunction with Pandora battery. Without it the PSP won’t run the hacking procedure.
Requisites
- PSP previously hacked
- MS greater than or equal to 256 MB (Sony or Sandisk original are better)
Needed files
In order to make the magic MS you will need to follow these steps:
- Download Despertar del Cementerio 8.
- Extract the file and copy it to /PSP/GAME on the MS.
- Download oficial firmware 5.00
- Copy file 500.PBP to the MS root, I mean, to the MS directly, no into a directory.
Making the magic MS
The procedure of making is easy, just run on a hacked PSP program Despertar del Cementerio 8 from Game menu and follow directions. This video shows the procedure.
XPeria Play…Sony will have learned the lesson?
Posted by Luis Gallardo in Android, PSP on 15/02/2011
Given the experienced I have on both platforms (Sony’s PSP and Google’s Android) I was brooding on the security issue Sony will have to deal with. Why? Well, Almost all Android phones I know can be “rooted”, in other words, to gain administration access (root account) to do whatever you wan on the phone, meaning, to install and execute any program without restrictions.
Sony is known for being closed (just remember the PS3 issues, or even further back in time the lost battle of the Betamax against the VHS format). On the other hand I don’t think the hacker comunity and the scene movement will miss the opportunity of hacking the console’s security just to show the can do it, or install homebrew applications with root access needs (in fact you can download such apps on Android’s MArket legally, meaning, Google agrees with those apps), and of course there will be people interested in running backup games (and those with no shame that will run those games illegally).
Now my concerns:
- In case all this happens, which features will Sony remove to the XPeria Play in order ensure security?
- Sony will have learned the lesson with the PSP and the PS3?
- Are people willing to gamble on this new gaming console / phone?
I guess only time will tell…

How to make a pandora battery
Posted by Luis Gallardo in PSP on 22/12/2010
The purpose of making a pandora battery is to avoid the PSP’s normal boot sequence, to make the PSP be in service mode by reading special files on the memory stick. By analogy, it’s like when we have a cd in the PC and it starts not from the hard drive but from a CD.
There are two ways of making a pandora battery: one way is by hardware, so you have to open the battery and cut a pin. The other way is by software, this is, the eeprom is modified to send a special sequence to the PSP to make it put in service mode. You will use the software method.
I’ve tested several programs to make the pandora battery, among are UltraPandora Installer 4, Hellcat’s Recovery Flasher, and OS Pandora Battery Tool. I suggest to use the latter. So here is the steps:
- Download OS Open Pandora Battery Tool 0.52.
- Extract it. It will make a directory named ospbt_052. You have to copy that folder on the MS, into /PSP/GAME folder, so you will have the following directory: /PSP/GAME/ospbt_052.
- Go to Game menu and run the applications as is shown on the video.
- In the application select Convert to service mode (aka: pandora’s battery).
NOTE: I recommend to backup the eeprom before converting the battery to pandora just in case, but I’ve never had any issues with the process of making the pandora battery.
