Wii Guitar for “Frets on Fire” on Linux

Link to the video

My newphew’s Wii Guitar arrived and he asked me to install it on his Wii. Everything works perfectly there…I remembered Frets on Fire can handle a Wii Guitar (and PS3, XBOX, and even PS2 guitars) so I decided to test it on Linux. Now that it’s working, here you are the directions…

Installing the software

Just two files are needed: wminput to detect the device; and mouseemu to make it works as a mouse. So, install them:

moody:~#  aptitude install wminput mouseemu

Setting the guitar on Linux

Copy the  following content in a file called guitar.cfg:

# Wii Guitar profile for Frets on Fire
Classic.Down=KEY_ENTER #Strum
Classic.Dpad.X = ABS_X
Classic.Dpad.Y = ABS_Y
Classic.LStick.X = ABS_HAT0X
Classic.LStick.Y = ABS_HAT0Y
Classic.RStick.X = ABS_HAT1X
Classic.RStick.Y = ABS_HAT1Y
Classic.A = KEY_F1 #First Fret starting at top of wiiguitar
Classic.B = KEY_F2 #Second Fret
Classic.X = KEY_F3 #Third Fret
Classic.Y = KEY_F4 #Forth Fret
Classic.Minus = BTN_SELECT
Classic.Plus = BTN_START
Classic.Home = BTN_MODE
Classic.L = BTN_TL
Classic.R = BTN_TR
Classic.ZL = KEY_F5 #Fifth Fret
Classic.ZR = BTN_TR2

Running Frets on Fire

To detect the guitar, run the following command:

sudo wminput -c ./guitar.cfg

Now go to Applications  > Games > Frets on Fire and set the guitar from Settings >  Key Settings, as is show on the video.

No violent video games…more safety?

Videojuegos violentos

No,  this is not due to the electrical rationing that Venezuela is facing, this is the result of the law against violent video games.

And what about the real violence, the one that kills people?…That’s okay, because there aren’t any law for protect us or against real delinquents, those outside a “plaiestachon” (as our president would say) because they know impunity rules our country.

Pack PRINNY: Can I Really Be The Hero?

At last after a long wait (due to the courier here in Venezuela) I got my PRINNY: Can I Really Be The Hero? pack. This game is a Disgaea’s spin-off  whose main characters  this time are prinnies, a kind of explosive blue penguins that attack using bombs or knives. Its originality highlights among other psp games.

Here’s some pics I took to the pack.

SNES Emulation on PSP

We already saw a NES Emulator for PSP, now here’s a SNES emulator. Play once again your old SNES cartridge games on your PSP anywhere. Let’s see how to install it…

Installation and execution

Download the Snes9xTYL 0.4.3me file and extract it. Copy the snes9xTYL directory into /PSP/GAMES folder on your memory stick. In order to exec the emulator just run it from the game menu from the XMB.

Where to put the roms?

You’ll find a folder called ROMS in the snes9xTYL folder, just put all your games there. In any case, don’t worry because you can always browse in the PSP’s folders until reach the rom you want to load.

Where to find the roms?

Once again, to download games you don’t own is illegal (piracy). You must own the cartridge you will play. Keeping this in mind, you can find many roms on Internet (google is your friend). There are several sites where you can find a complete list of SNES roms.

NES Emulator on PSP

Do you miss your 8-bits NES console (a.k.a Famicom) where you spent hours playing your favorites games like Super Mario Bros, Megaman, Zelda, Dr. Mario, Contra and many others? Well, no more homesickness because there’s an emulator called NesterJ for your PSP. Also as a plus, beside it’s a portable NES, you can save your game (something you couldn’t do on the original console), and use code cheaters.

Note: The new version,  NesterJ v1.13 beta2 now supports Half-Byte-Loader (HBL by m0skit0 y Wololo), so you should be able to run the emulator on firmwares higer than 5.03, for example firmware 6.20!!

Let’s see how to install it on the PSP…

Installing and running the emulator

  • Download NesterJ v1.13 beta2
  • Extract it and go to the /PSP/GAME/ folder.
  • Copy NesterJ_v1_13beta2 folder to /PSP/GAMES directory on your memory stick.
  • To run the emulator just launch it from the game menu in the XMB.

Where to put the games?

Just make a new directory called ROMS in the 192_NesterJ_v1_07 we just copied previously and put all your roms there. In any case, don’t worry because you’ll be able to find any rom using the emulator’s browser.

Where to get the ROMS?

This is a a little complicated issue, because Nintendo claims many roms still have copyright so downloading roms from Internet is illegal. Any way, it’s up to you …so, roms can be downloaded from Internet, and there are a lot of sites out there. Just put “NES roms” in your preferred search engine.
